Fire-Rated Assemblies Start with the Right Board

When a project calls for fire-rated construction, the right gypsum board can make all the difference. Fire-rated walls and ceilings are built as complete systems, which means the board, framing, fasteners, layers, insulation, and installation method all need to work together as part of the specified assembly.

That’s where FBM helps Pros build with confidence. As a leading distributor of specialty building materials, FBM supplies the products contractors need to keep projects moving, including drywall, steel studs, insulation, acoustical ceilings, tools, and other jobsite essentials. Through our network of local branches and vendor partnerships, FBM helps contractors source the right materials for the right application.

One of those trusted vendor partners is National Gypsum, the exclusive service provider for products manufactured by Gold Bond® Building Products, LLC. National Gypsum has been serving the construction industry for decades with gypsum board, finishing products, and technical resources that support a wide range of commercial and residential applications.  What is Fire-Shield Gypsum Board?

Gold Bond Fire-Shield Gypsum Board is designed for use in fire-rated wall and ceiling assemblies where fire-resistant gypsum board is required. It is manufactured with a fire-resistant gypsum core encased in heavy, natural-finish paper and is used as a component in specific tested fire-rated designs. Fire-rated performance is not based on the board alone — it comes from the full tested assembly. That means the board must be used with the correct framing, fasteners, spacing, layers, joint treatment, and installation methods called for in the project documents or approved assembly design. Fire-Shield panel also includes GridMarX® guide marks on the face paper. These printed marks help installers identify stud locations and make accurate cuts without penciling lines or snapping chalk, supporting a faster and more consistent installation process.

When to Use Fire-Shield Gypsum Board

Gold Bond Fire-Shield Gypsum Board is intended for interior fire-rated wall and ceiling applications, including single- or multi-layer construction. It may be used on wood or steel framing, depending on the tested assembly and project requirements.

Common applications include:

  • Fire-rated corridor walls

  • Tenant separation walls

  • Rated ceiling assemblies

  • Commercial interior partitions

  • Multi-family and institutional construction

  • Other code-driven applications where tested fire resistance is required
