Although the terms 'caulk' and 'sealant' are often used interchangeably, they aren't the same product. The main difference is the flexibility (or elasticity) when the material is dry. Traditional caulk is more rigid, which is why it's often used for grout between shower or kitchen tiles. Sealant tends to be more flexible, meaning it's more suitable in spaces that expand or contract, like around windows or doors, showers, and tubs.

 

Different sealant and caulk materials have different strengths. For example, silicone caulk usually lasts longer in more challenging environments, such as around doors and windows. Acrylic caulk, on the other hand, is more paintable and easier to blend into surrounding materials. Some adhesive caulk products combine these materials to get the properties of both. Acrylic latex caulk with silicone provides a crack-free, flexible finish that's paintable after 30 minutes.
